Track Record: Setting The Stage
Posted by Lucy on 5th Mar 2020
Have you ever wondered what's involved in getting a rally car prepared? Perhaps you'd like to see some in car video footage as cars hurtle around the rally stages? Maybe you'd like to know more about building a car and having a go yourself?
If that has your attention, then our Track Record series of blog posts are not to be missed.
So, let me introduce myself. My name is Lucy, and recently I became an employee of Stoney Racing. Over the coming months, part of my job role is to bring you enjoyable content across our social media and our website.
I have always had a huge interest in cars, from an early age, and at the age of 13 I convinced my parents to buy me a mini. We've all owned a mini right? It was an accident damaged car bought for just £90, but all I wanted to do was strip it down and learn how things worked, and to some degree the learning was a partial success. By that, I mean I'm no mechanic, but I do understand how parts work and how to repair or replace them.
Once I had turned seventeen, I soon passed my test, and over the next few years owned another mini, before buying a now classic hot hatch, the Ford Escort XR3i. This was back in the late 90's, but the 'petrol head' seed was well and truly planted.

"The Escort in Action at the Speed & Rally Show" |
I've always loved spectating at rallies, but in 2017 I decided that I'd actually like to have a go, and after some searching a good spec Mk2 Escort was purchased. She was running a very strong 2.1 Pinto with twin Webber 45 carbs, and managed a respectable 189bhp on the rolling road.
I spent the next two years entering events as often as I could, and really started to get used to the car. However, during our last event, we bent a valve due to the timing belt jumping and had to retire from the rally. Now, there's another engine on the garage floor awaiting transplant, and it’s something a little more exciting.
I've made some super new friends along the way too, many of whom service for us and make excellent tea, coffee and bacon butties throughout the day.
Head over to our Facebook page if you'd like to keep up with our progress, and see the reveal of our Stoney Racing sponsored Mk2 Escort livery. Our first event is on 4th April, where we'll bring you updates throughout the weekend and some in car sideways footage.
